You aren’t the only ones struggling with feeling out-of-sync with your body. Perhaps you have emotional, digestive and hormonal imbalance? I have struggled with that too. In high school I had debilitating, painful menstrual cycles with extreme bleeding; On top of that, I had cystic acne. The dermatologist started me out on a tetracycline, an antibiotic. And not long after that, my primary care doctor put me on the birth control pill for the acne and to regulate my cycle.

Unfortunately, my health issues worsened due to the combination of the two medications, and I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. After stumbling upon a book in the health section at my local bookstore, I discovered the pharmaceutical cocktail was a surefire recipe for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. With an overgrowth of yeast in my body, I was exhausted everyday even with getting ten to twelve hours of sleep per night. I was depressed, falling behind in school, and felt helpless. Astonished at how doctors could prescribe this to me and how I blindly trusted them, I started to do independent research on health. Thus, the journey began.

After overcoming CFS with candida restrictive diets, I was still left with a slew of other health problems such as eczema since birth, persistent dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia, severe digestive upset with pain, seasonal and food allergies, and recurrent sinus infections. In my early twenties, when my eczema was at its worse covering my entire back, my mother took me to a Chinese herbalist. Two weeks later and after religiously consuming the customized herbal formula, my incapacitating dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia disappeared. In next to no time, so did the persistent eczema.

Short of a miracle, I was cured! Previous to that, I had tried every cleanse on the market, diet plan, and every steroid cream or topical. Nothing worked. From then on, with acupuncture, herbs, dietary therapy and lifestyle changes, I tackled health problem after health problem uncovering the imbalances in my body and unveiling the secret truth to wellness. I learned how to promote the body’s natural propensity to heal itself and promote health, instead of treating the disease mechanism with a substance that only temporarily changes or bandaids the problem. I was able to reclaim my health--my birthright.

At the Southwest Acupuncture College, Santa Fe, I was blessed to discover my present mentor, Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, 88th generation Taoist priest from the Jade Purity School. After studying under different traditions and advanced teachers, I resonate most with the spiritual teachings rooted in Taoism transmitted from Dr. Yuen. As a living treasure, his depth of knowledge and enlightened understanding of Classical Chinese medicine and the relation to modern medicine, inspires me to be a skillful, compassionate practitioner with each patient in my practice.
